What you Need

  • 4 Cardboard Paper Towel Rolls [per Reindeer]
  • Paper Mache Paste
  • Newspaper or Newsprint cut in strips
  • Water base Paint
  • Brushes
  • Googly Eyes [optional]
  • Ribbon [optional]
  • Brown Pipecleaner
  • Small Pom Pom
  • Masking Tape
  • Glue [or hot glue gun]
  • Sealer

Instructions

Parental supervision is required.

Prepare Paper Mache Paste and allow to cool before using.

Cover work area with newspaper or drop cloth.

Use 3/4 of one of the paper towel rolls to form the back of the reindeer. Use two whole paper towel rolls for front and hind legs. Fold each in half and cut an area in the middle to slide over top of the back of reindeer. Make sure all four 'feet' are even on table. Hold together with masking tape. Using remaining paper towel roll, cut to shape the neck and head, using masking tape to hold in place.

Once you have the basic form of your reindeer cover with 6-inch x 1-inch newspaper strips dipped in paper mache paste. Make sure joints are all well covered. Allow to dry for several hours or overnight.

Once dry, you can paint your reindeer any color you wish! Go with the regular brown reindeer for an authentic look or create something unique like the one in the photo.

Once the paint is dry you can glue on the googly eyes [or paint yours one], glue on the pom pom for the nose and attach your pipecleaner for antlers. To attach, poke a small hole through head and pull one side of pipecleaner through to other side - then kink the pipecleaner to form antlers.

You can also add a nice holiday ribbon around the neck. Be creative and make your own design of reindeer - or make many!
