May Day

Definition: For over 3000 years, May 1 has been a day to welcome summer. It is also an international labor holiday in many countries especially those with Communist or Socialist governments.

May Day became a labor holiday in the 1800s when the Socialist Party declared May 1 an international worker's celebration.

May Poles symbolized a tree during this holiday. They are decorated with ribbons and dancers circle it on May Day. For hundreds of years May Poles have been linked with freedom and the rights of common people because they were erected on common land and thew hole community celebrated.
