Definition:
Louis Riel was a famous Metis leader who helped his people form a goverment and become part of the newly created Dominion of Canada in 1870.
In 1885, Riel led a rebellion against the Canadian authorities in the west because he feared that more and more Metis lands would be lost to new settlers.
Today his name is a symbol of native independence.
Celebrated in Canada on November 16.
