"John never did explain to anyone what was going on and David didn't press his father. He wanted to get along with him now that they were no longer in the city. Everyone was used to John keeping secrets and doing strange things in the middle of the night. Indeed, for as long as David and George could remember, John had been secretive and mysterious."
The second book in the Young Heroes of History series continues the story of David, distraught after his friend Lisa is captured by slavers and returned to her plantation.
David has run away to his parents home in Bleeding Kansas. His cousin George Adams is forced to go after him. What neither boy knows is that for years, David's parents have been involved with the infamous John Brown, and his violent plans to end slavery.
Again in this story, readers are thrown into the times of violent struggles and crisis. When the boys learn the truth of John Brown's raid at Harpers Ferry the family is divided in the heated slavery debate.
The book helps readers understand the history of the times from all sides as the boys are followed, threatened and attacked by both abolitionist and slave supporters.
While the characters are fictional, the young heroes come to life and you'll want to follow them as they travel through history. Both books in the series are based on factual records that give thought and understanding of the times.
I look forward to reading the third book in the series, Off to Fight.
