Their paths cross when David tries to help Lisa, who had escaped with her father from the plantation, and were fleeing to freedom.
David and Lisa must face the hatred, fear and danger of the times and the determination of the slave catchers to send Lisa back to the plantation.
The book is written in an easy to understand format, based on facts, that young adults will find easy to read. The language and actions of the characters in the book may seem inappropriate, however, they are based on the times of the story and give readers a better understanding of those times.
Although the characters in the book are fictional they reflect the many young heroes of the time and give readers a new understanding of the events and situations in history.
