Arm & Hammer Baking Soda®’s Search for the Kid with the Sharpest Taste Buds At-Home Taste Bud Audition

To take the test, kids should ask an adult to help prepare and administer the test. If your child is diabetic, please consult his or her pediatrician before conducting the test.

Test 1 – Flavor Fluency: This test measures your ability to tell the difference between flavors

Materials Steps
  • 3 Different Flavors of Ice Cream
  • 1. Prepare the samples of Ice Cream:
    Using individual spoons, place a small scoop of the three flavors of ice cream in different cups. Leave the spoon in the cup for tasting.
  • 3 Small Cups
  • 2. Setting up: (Confidential)
    A helper should place all three cups of ice cream, with spoons, in front of the child doing the Flavor Fluency test.
  • 3 Teaspoons
  • 3. Tasting: (Confidential)
    Important! The child should be blindfolded to prevent seeing the ice cream and only the helper is to know which flavor is being tasted.
    Give the child a taste from each of the cups using the spoon in each. The child is to tell the helper the flavor of each. (Don’t mix up the spoons or the tastes will change

    Test 2 – Sweet-n-Salty Sleuths: This test determines your ability to tell the difference between salty and sweet

    Materials Steps
  • 24 ounces of drinking water
  • 3 8-oz cups
  • 3 spoons for mixing and tasting
  • 1 measuring cup
  • 4 teaspoons of sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon of table salt
  • 1 1-teaspoon measuring spoon
  • 1 1/8-teaspoon measuring spoon
  • 1. Prepare the following solutions for tasting:
    Important! Don’t forget to wash and dry any materials you used from test 1.
    Sugar water
    Prepare 2 cups by placing a full 8 ounces of water in each cup. Add 2 level teaspoons of sugar to each of the cups and stir with a spoon until the sugar dissolves. Leave the spoon in the cup for tasting.
    Salty water
    Place a full 8 ounces of water in a cup. Add a level 1/8 teaspoon of table salt to the cup and stir with a spoon until the salt is dissolved. Leave the spoon in the cup for tasting.
      2. Setting up: (Confidential)
    A helper should place all three cups, with three spoons, in front of the child doing the triangle test. The cups can be labeled randomly but only the helper is to know where the salt is.
      3. Tasting:
    Ask the child to taste the water in each cup using a separate spoon and tell has the salt. (Don’t mix up the spoons or the tastes will change!)

    Test 3 – Sweets Matter: This test measures your ability to tell differences in the level of sweetness

    Materials
  • 24 oz of drinking water
  • 3 8-oz cups
  • 3 spoons for mixing and tasting
  • 1 measuring cup
  • 1 measuring teaspoon
  • 6 teaspoons of sugar
  • Steps
    1. Prepare the following solutions for tasting:
    Important! Don’t forget to wash and dry any materials you used from test 1.
    Place a full 8 ounces of water in each of the three cups. Line up the three cups left to right.
    Sweet - To the first cup on your left add 1 level teaspoon of sugar and stir with a spoon until the sugar is dissolved. Leave the spoon in the cup for tasting.
    Super Sweet - To the second cup add 2 level teaspoons of sugar and stir with a spoon until the sugar is dissolved. Leave the spoon in the cup for tasting.
    Extreme Sweetness - To the third cup add 3 level teaspoons of sugar and stir with a spoon until the sugar is dissolved. Leave the spoon in the cup for tasting.
    2. Setting up: (Confidential)
    A helper should place all three cups, with spoons, in front of the child doing the intensity evaluation. The cups may be labeled randomly but only the helper is to know how much sugar is in each.
    3. Tasting:
    Ask the child to taste the water in each cup using a separate spoon. He or she is to decide which cup is the sweetest and which is not. (Don’t mix up the spoons or the tastes will change!)
