Ravensburger Makes Puzzles Come Alive with All-New 'Augmented Reality' Technology


Mobile App Animates Traditional Puzzles with Video, Sound Effects And More for Compelling, Interactive Fun
Newton, NH - February 12, 2012 - (Virtual Press Office) - Ravensburger, the first name in high-quality, beautifully-
designed puzzles and playthings, is transforming the puzzle experience with its ground-breaking Augmented Reality (AR) line of interactive puzzles. Debuting is a collection of four 2D puzzles that come to life with a downloadable free app from the App Store that utilizes the camera function of the iPhone® or iPad®2 to animate the scene and provides a deeper connection to the puzzle through the 3D experience. The exciting new Augmented Reality range - along with the entire Ravensburger line of puzzles, games and WOW brand toys - will be showcased at the 2012 American International Toy Fair, February 12-15, at the Javits Convention Center, Booth #441.

"Our debut Augmented Reality lineup adds a modern, digital touch to traditional puzzle play," said Thomas Kaeppler, CEO, Ravensburger. "Once the puzzle is completed, people observe a totally new visual reality and benefit from value-added details that provide an experience unlike any other."

The technology featured in Ravensburger's new AR offerings adds a digital component that enables puzzlers to animate the image and reveal audio details, sound effects and factual information about the scene for a dynamic and distinctly 21st Century experience. The free app, AR Puzzle, is available for iPhone 3G, 4G and 4S versions and for iPad2.

The first four 1,000-pc AR puzzles will be available in fall 2012, each priced at $19.99. In addition to the AR technology, each of the new puzzles features Ravensburger's Premium Puzzle Softclick Technology, ensuring that all of the precision-cut pieces snap together perfectly to compose a beautiful and seamless image. The debut offerings include:

  • Above the Roofs of Paris - A memorable tour of the City of Lights with a 360-degree view of Paris at night, including the Eiffel Tower, presented with background information about various city sights against a musical backdrop. The audio in the AR app is available in six languages: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch.

  • Colorful Underwater World - Puzzlers can "go fishing" for special deep-sea coral and spectacular fish species with this brilliantly colored puzzle. With the help of the AR technology, this look-and-find puzzle challenges digital puzzlers to memorize the details of fish as they swim by and then find them in the large underwater scene.

  • African Animals - The safari begins with an exquisite depiction of exotic animals near a watering hole, and comes to vibrant life with five different videos of the species in the scene. The still image reflects the starting point of the puzzle and moves along as the animation narrates the continuation of the activity.

  • Lofoten, Norway - A sunny, picturesque Nordic day changes dramatically when the user touches the iPhone or iPad screen to transform the scene into a winter wonderland. The more the screen is touched, the more snow cascades down into the stunning scene.
