Names For Stuffed Animals

young girl playing with her stuffed animal

My daughter has loads of stuffed animal toys, and I mean loads. I remember as a boy I had maybe two or three (I vaguely remember I had a little elf called Smudge and a teddy bear called Bobby!). Should your child have names for their stuffed toys?

Actually it’s a good thing for your child to name their stuffed animals or any toy for that matter. It’s important for their growth as it gives them a sense of ownership and responsibility for their possessions. Also, it can assist in their speech and cognitive development as it can encourage your child to play with these toys by themselves and create their own role-play and fun activities.

Tips on naming a stuffed animal

If you’re still stuck on helping your child come up with a name for their stuffed toy, here are a few tips:

  1. Name it after a loved one or someone (or something) your child likes. Consider nicknames too.
  2. Look at the features of the toy. Is it fluffy? What color is it? Are any of the features bigger or smaller than normal (stuffed animals often have big heads or big eyes)
  3. Don’t think about it too much. Sometimes keeping it simple is the best strategy. My daughter’s favorite toy is a stuffed rabbit called Bunny. I know it’s pretty unoriginal but she’s happy and totally adores it. My son’s favourite toy is a stuffed polar bear, called Bear.
