How Many Diapers Are In A Diaper Cake?

Although it’s not something you can eat (for obvious reasons), diaper cakes are a popular gift choice for baby showers or just as something to help out new parents. There are many innovative designs, from ones which look like wedding cakes, to some which look like bikes or cars.
In this article, let’s look at how many diapers you will need in a diaper cake, based on a standard wedding cake design. In general, for multiple tiers, you want to halve the number of diapers each time you go up to a higher layer.
What is a diaper cake?
As the name suggests, it’s simply a cake made from diapers, usually disposable ones. At a distance, it can look like an actual cake, with 1, 2, 3 or even 4 tiers. You can decorate them with ribbons, cuddly toys, or by adding some lettering of the mom or the name of the baby. They are most commonly found at baby showers, as a gift given by friends or family, but they can be used as a centrepiece on a table and made by the mom-to-be.
How do you make a diaper cake?
You can be very creative when designing a diaper cake, as it can match the theme of a baby shower, or reflect some of the interests or personality of the mom-to-be.
- You can roll the disposable diapers up to form a cylinder, which is time consuming, but it does result in a more stable structure, especially if you have multiple layers. For extra support, you can attach a rubber band around each diaper.
- Alternatively, you can just wedge each diaper next to each other to form a circular shape. This is quite tricky as it’s a bit less stable. It’s also harder to attach additional decorations to it as the whole thing could fall down like a pack of cards! You also need more diapers with this approach.

How many diapers do you need for small diaper cake?
The number of diapers your will need all depends on how big you want the cake to be. For just a simple one tier diaper cake, that is easy to arrange with a few decorations, you many only need around 20-30 diapers.
How many do you need for a 2 tier diaper cake?
If you want to add an additional layer on top, you need to ensure you have less than on the bottom. Again, think of the design of a wedding cake. The bottom tier is the biggest and widest so it can support the weight of additional layers on top. Assuming you have around 20-30 diapers at the bottom, you can probably get by with 10-15 diapers for a second layer.
How many diapers for a 3 tier diaper cake?
Now things are getting fiddlier! If you want a third layer on top, it has to be less than the previous two layers. Assuming your diaper cake has 20-30 as the first layer, then 10-15 above that, at the top you will probably only need 5-7 diapers.
How many do you need for a 4 tier one?
If you are being very creative, why not try a fourth layer? At this point, you may want to consider having a bigger base than just 20-30 diapers, and expand each layer above that, to support a fourth tier on top. You will probably need at least 5-7 diapers as a top layer, which will mean having about 40-60 at the bottom.
What size diapers are used for a diaper cake?
Although you may be tempted to buy some newborn size diapers, I would consider purchasing some size 1 diapers instead. Some babies born with even average birth weights can skip the newborn size altogether, so you want to avoid buying something which the new parents won’t be able to use. You could even skip to size 2 or 3 if you prefer as you know they’ll be used at some point.
Our son didn’t use a single newborn size diaper when he was born, as he was born at just over 8lbs. We went straight to size 1 diapers and 0-3 month clothing.
You could also be more creative and have a different sized diaper for each layer. Assuming you opt for a three tier design, you can have newborn size diapers at the top, then size 1 and size 2 at the bottom.
