Mother's Day

Definition: Mother's Day is a little over 100 years old. It started after the American Civil War in the early 1860s, when Julia Ward Howe launched a Mother's Day for Peace.

The first Mother's Day for peace was held in 1872.

In 1907, Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia had the idea of holding special church services in honor of mothers. In 1914 the President of the United States declared the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.
